Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the questions we encounter from time to time. If you do not see the answer or question you wanted, please send your question to Contact.
Q: What is 'freelance' photography
A: Freelance photographers are simply self-employed photographers
who create images, which which may be sold as individual images or
collections, to publications, individuals or organizations. Freelance photographers are usually creative individuals who choose
to work independently and follow their own muse. Creativity involves the ability to capture unique moments, poses,
expressions, and candid compositions through the eye of a camera.
Whiles images taken on assignment or while under employ typically belong
to the employer, images acquired by a freelance photographer
typically become the property of the photographer; until they are
sold or assigned. Images may be licensed for single or
multiple uses with rights retained by the photographer, or a
freelance photographer may sell all rights to an image. A freelance
photographer may license the use of their photographs through
stock-photo agencies or market their work directly to the public.
Stock-photo agencies sell the right to use photographs to magazines
or other clients or the photographer may be paid by commission.
Q: How much does it cost to have an
event photographed
A: There is no single answer answer to that question. Variables
include the cost of travel: There is no charge for local travel
within 25 miles, we charge our actual cost plus $25 per hour of
travel), the type of event, and length of time of the event. We
generally charge $100 for the first hour and $25 for each additional
hour with a maximum daily charge of $250. Editing, e.g. Photoshop,
is $25 per hour, one hour minimum. Prints at our actual cost plus
shipping and handling charges, $5 to $50 depending on the size of
the package.
For example, if we do a local photo shoot
that takes about two hours. If no editing or prints are
requested, we would mail the client CDs or DVDs containing all of
the images, one of which plays a DVD slide show on most DVD
players and another containing the 50 to 100 image files. The client
will retain ownership and copyrights to the images and may publish
the images, print or obtain
any needed prints at a local photo shop. In this example the total
charges would be $125 plus any applicable taxes.
Q: What is the most important part of
photographic equipment used by photographers.
A: Some will tell you it is the lens, others will say the film or
digital sensor, or studio lighting equipment. The correct answer is
the photographer's eye. Even with
the best equipment, training and experience, a photographer will
fail if he or she cannot see the images that need to be captured on
film or electronic sensor as well as what the captured photographic
image will look like when viewed on printed or digital media.
